Golden Sierra High School-Garden Valley Fire Protection

District Celebrate 20 Years of Partnership

Twenty years ago, Superintendent-Principal Jeremy Meyers asked Garden Valley fire fighter Mike Sampson to teach fire science in Golden Sierra’s Regional Occupational Program (ROP) program. Garden Valley Fire Chief Bob Woods approved the project. On June 13 the Black Oak Mine Unified School District Board of Trustees will honor Sampson and fellow Garden Valley fire fighters for twenty years of exemplary partnership in providing GSJSH students with the Fire/Emergency Medical Responder program in today’s Career Technical Program (CTE).

What began as a single class now provides students a two-year program with career opportunities in fire science and emergency medical response. Junior and senior high school students are eligible and next year’s program has become so sought after that students will have to apply for one of twenty spots.

The program begins with an Emergency Medical Responder course in which students study to become certified in CPR and receive a Basic Life Support Provider card. Extensive coursework includes life and biological sciences with teacher Corrine Staves, who took over from Sampson in 2015, as well as from guest lecturers such as local chiropractor and volunteer fireman Keith Harston, Chaplain Terry Brown, CHP and CalStar. Successful students receive an EMR certificate when they turn eighteen.

The next phase of the program focuses on the fire side of the career with the study of the chemistry of fire, classifications of fire and building construction. Students do online coursework about the Incident Command System and receive certificates of completion. GVFPD Assistant Chief Linda Szczepanik teaches wildland firefighting essential skills that include fire behavior, how to cut line, set back fire and lay progressive hose lays. Students receive certificates that qualify them for entry level jobs.

Additional skills taught include Low Angle Rope Rescue, extraction, ladders and the opportunity to climb a 24-foot ladder in a stadium rise. The final exam is an arrival drill in which students park an engine, size up the incident, don their gear, secure water to a hose that is then pulled to a structure. Students are timed.

Throughout the program, students experience real life situations such as ride-alongs on the Georgetown Fire Medic Unit or the engine at Garden Valley FPD, field trips to Head Start to work with children and to the Sierra College Fire Academy.

Success is the hallmark of this program, one of the few in the state that teaches both structure and wildland fire protection. Graduation of the class of 2019 took place on May 10. Recent grads include Bryan Nixon, Emma Michul, Jack Webb, Zack Lamphere, and Tyler Wright from GSJSH. Also graduating from this year’s program are former Army serviceman Brian Morris, son of GSJSHS Assistant Principal Ron Morris and GSJSH graduate Michelle Gerondakis who returned for this career training opportunity.

Golden Sierra Student Studies in Japan

What would it be like to travel to a foreign country, study in a new language, live with a new family and become immersed in a completely new culture?  Golden Sierra High School junior Kiyana Pitre did just that. In August 2018, Pitre, who studied Japanese online for two years, became an exchange student through CIEE’s Global Navigator Study Abroad Program at Doshisha International High School in Kyoto, Japan.  She loved it so much that her semester became a full year of study. Parents Mike Pitre and Kalin Finsand, GSJSHS graduate and big sister Mika, as well as Grandma Lucy Finsand will join Pitre for a three-week final tour of Japan before returning to Cool in June.

When asked to describe the highlights of her year abroad, Pitre smiled and said, “My host families, living in a completely different culture and attending school in a different country.”  Her host families have been very welcoming and involved, exposing her to wonderful food, baseball with little brothers, friendship with a big brother and sister and living in a small traditional Japanese village near the Byodo-in Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

School days are very different in Kyoto.  Just getting to school has been an experience, including an hour and a half journey by bus, two trains and walking. Classes in English, Science, History, Pre-Calculus, Health and Physics, are all taught in Japanese six days a week. When asked how she managed working in Japanese, Pitre shared that she has had very helpful Japanese tutors during study hall. Her after-school volleyball club is held seven days a week with tournaments in neighboring cities that she travels to via public transportation.

Another extra special highlight was Golden Week, a Japanese holiday that was extended ten days this year due to the extraordinary Imperial Succession.  Pitre traveled with her host family to their family home on the Japanese Sea where they fished, toured local historical sites, experienced a traditional onsen (bath house) and sampled unique Japanese cuisine.

Pitre’s plans for senior year at GSJSHS include sharing a presentation of her year abroad with fellow students, continuing her study of Japanese, dance, art, music and preparing for college which may be abroad.  Pitre believes this year in Japan has helped her become a more globalized citizen and more aware of the possibilities that she has before her. It is obvious that leaving will be bittersweet but the memories will be forever cherished.

Loya Small School South Optimist All-Star MVP

The 42nd Annual Optimist High School Basketball All Star Game April 6, 2019 at Sacramento High School was a high scoring affair.  Golden Sierra's Rachel Loya was honored as the south's MVP in a losing effort. Her 12 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 4 rebounds in 28 minutes of play secured the MVP honor.

Rachel's fan base drew the attention of opposing coach Jeff Wise of Center High School, as he stated to Rachel during introductions, "that's an impressive following you have there." To which Loya replied, "they love me."  And, it's true, she did have quite the fan base in attendance, and they do love her. Her cousin Lucas Larson said,"she's insane, she's sooo good, and I am really proud of her." Loya's high school coach and longtime family friend Meghan Wright with tears in her eyes gave Rachel a big hug after the game.  Loya said, "Meghan isn't just a coach, she is family and I love her. She's been a huge part of my career and I will miss her." Loya is off to Sierra College next year to play for the Wolverines. However, she will always be a Grizzly. Loya has definitely left her mark on the Golden Sierra hardwood. She has set the school record in most steals in a game--16, and tied for most points in a game--45. She was also given Co-MVP of the Sierra Foothill League.

Years of playing for AAU Nor-Cal Dynasty under coach Tom Tran (an assistant coach for Sierra College), has honed her skills.  "I can't wait to play for Tom at Sierra. He has recruited a great AAU team and we will be playing in Oregon, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles this summer, and I am super excited."

Rachel wanted to thank her Mom, Carol Loya for the years of incredible support so that she could play this sport she loves so much.  Without her support, she would not be the player she is today. "Thanks Mom. What an incredible gift you have given me, and I love you" Loya stated with obvious emotion playing out on her face.

Rachel has been approached by several schools to play, but has chosen to go to Sierra to get bigger, faster, stronger before transferring to a four year college. Well, Rach Rach, we can't wait to see you on the next phase of your journey.  Good Luck.

Grizzly Bass Masters take on Lake Berryessa

By Ed Hawkins

Photos by Ed Larson

A cool morning greeted the Golden Sierra Grizzly Bass anglers at Lake Berryessa as they gathered in the pre-dawn hours on the morning of March 24, for high school bass tournament number 7 of 8.

Golden Sierra’s primary four teams were there at the blastoff of over 80 boats.  Year end results and a chance to compete in the Nor-Cal High School Tournament of Champions in May remains on the line for some of our teams.

For the team of Jon Loya and Luke Gerondakis making the TOC is a done deal.  They came to the afternoon weigh in with a huge limit that no one from Golden Sierra could come close to.

They generally had the same fish as everyone else except for a huge 6.43 pound large mouth that Jon Loya caught on a, well he isn’t saying, that kept them on the top of the Golden Sierra standings and earned them second place in the tournament.

After two weak finishes in the middle of the season Jon and Luke have come on at the end and are giving us all a clinic on how it is done.  Second place for Golden Sierra was the team of Riley Maloney and Clay Smith.

They had a fine bag but could not find the big one Team Loya found.  Right behind Smith and Maloney was the team of Josh Weinberger and Jacob Lawrence.

Losing a big one at the boat cost these guys a great finish but they still nailed a nice limit and finished well in the tournament.

Our fourth-place team was James and Keaton Wright.

Black Oak Mine Unified School District

Press Release

March 2019

Black Oak Mine Skiers Take Top State and National Honors

Golden Sierra Junior/Senior High School’s (GSJSHS) 2019 one and only skier, senior Lucas Murray, has been selected as the California Inter Scholastic Federation (CIF) Sac-Joaquin Section Sierra Delta League Dale Lacky Scholarship recipient. This prestigious award is given to one male and one female athlete per league each academic year. Selection is based on academic achievement, community service and varsity athletic participation.

High school skiers are part of the California Nevada Inter Scholastic Ski and Snowboard Federation (CNISSF), a subset of the CIF. South 1 is one of six geographically oriented Divisions in the state. GSJSHS joins other El Dorado County high schools in this division. The goal of the CNISSF is to provide high schools with the opportunity to field teams for Alpine Racing, including Women’s Ski - Giant Slalom and Slalom; Men’s Ski - Giant Slalom and Slalom; Women’s Snowboard - Giant Slalom and Slalom; and Men’s Snowboard - Giant Slalom and Slalom. Sierra-at-Tahoe is the host ski resort for CNISSF South 1.

Murray and his dad, Carl, have a lifelong attachment to the sport of skiing. Murray senior began coaching at GSJSHS twelve years ago when his oldest son, Matthew, was on the team. Second son, Alexander, and now son Lucas have all skied for GSJSHS, culminating with Murray’s outstanding 2019 season, a first in Men’s Ski and fifth in the Men’s Ski State Championships. His next event depends on what university he chooses. He has currently been accepted at the University of Nevada at Reno, Colorado School of Mines, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Embry Riddle as a Mechanical Engineering Major. He is waiting to hear from Stanford and MIT. He may race at the college level depending on the school he attends.

The Sierra-at-Tahoe program promotes all age groups of skiing competition, as exemplified by another champion skier, Georgetown School sixth grader Wyatt Daugherty, who has been skiing since he was two. Mother, Jessica Pierce Daugherty, is a 1996 GSJSHS graduate who met her skiing husband, Josh, in Breckenridge, Colo. At age nine, the family realized that Wyatt had a future in skiing and that he “had something and needed to be pushed.”  He joined a development team and then progressed to a competition team, skiing with sixteen-year-olds until he broke his wrist in 2018.

Wyatt rides for the Sierra-at-Tahoe competition team in Free Style (Slope Style, Half Pipe, Rail Jam (parks) and Skier Cross) and Free Ski (back country going over jumps). From April 5-11, he will be competing at the USA Snow Board and Free Ski Association (USASA), skiing in Slope Style, Half Pipe and Skier Cross at Copper Mountain in Colorado, right near his father’s hometown. As mother Jessica says, “We’ve come full circle!”

When Wyatt’s mother asked him to describe skiing, he said, “My favorite part is the nervousness I feel right before I’m about to drop into a jump or trick and how great of a feeling it is when you know you have a trick down and you land it perfectly.” “That feeling of harnessing your nerves to land your perfect trick knowing it’s an individual sport and it’s totally up to you to land, is the best feeling for him,” added Daugherty.

GSJSH SCHEDULE CHANGES – IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Dear GSJSH Families,

Please note the schedule change for next week, Thursday March 14 and Friday March 15.  Both will be full school days. School will be dismissed Thursday at 2:40 and Friday at 1:50.

This change is a response to the snow and power outage days we have experienced so far this year and to avoid any change to the final day of school.

Additional schedule changes are also planned:

  • Former “snow days” will now be regular school attendance days:

    • May 3 – regular schedule

    • May 24 – regular schedule

  • Finals week schedule will be revised.  Minimum days will become full days. This schedule will be provided at a later date.

Thank you for your patience.  Questions can be directed to Judy at GSJSH: 530-333-8330.

College Sophomore Joe Webb is “digging it” at UC Merced this volleyball season with his sixth “double-double” match for the season. This defense-offense achievement is rare and Joe is making headlines.  (See link below). Majoring in mechanical engineering, Joe plans to complete his degree, then join the Air Force to become a helicopter pilot.

Joe is following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather, Joe Murphy, an engineer himself, who was a respected Georgetown resident, Rotarian and philanthropic community leader.  Joe’s grandmother, Betty Vogt, was a teacher at Georgetown School and Joe’s grandfather, Carl, was a fire fighter with CDF for thirty-one years. Father Mike Webb, North Division Chief for the Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Ranger Unit, currently assigned to the Conservation Camp, and mother Victoria Webb are both Golden Sierra graduates. Brother Jack is a GSJSH senior this year, currently Engine Company Officer for the Cameron Park Fire Explorers and a participant in the Divide Fire Academy as a Garden Valley Fire Department Volunteer Firefighter.

The Webb Family has yet another distinction:  Uncle Jim Webb was the first Golden Sierra Athlete of the Year of the first graduating class at Golden Sierra in 1981; Mother Victoria Ekberg Webb was GSJSH Athlete of the Year in 1986 and Joe was Athlete of the Year in 2017.

Press Release

Nolan Meyers Selected January Student of the Month

Sophomore Nolan Meyers was selected as January’s Student of the Month at Golden Sierra.  Nolan’s peers were unanimously in agreement when Nolan was presented with his certificate in class.  As his Spanish teacher, Gillian Salazar, said: “Nolan’s classmates were able to articulate exactly why he deserved it, citing examples from his exceptional efforts in class.  When the students can speak up like this in support of a classmate, I think it's clear we have an amazing individual in our midst.”

Congratulations, Nolan!

Black Oak Mine Unified School District

PRESS RELEASE

January 15, 2018

Talented Golden Sierra Artists Dazzle Community

“How did they do that?” and “That’s gorgeous!” were just a few of the comments by the Black Oak Mine Unified School District Board and community members when viewing an art display in the Board Room.

Erica Phillips, Visual Arts teacher at Golden Sierra, is very proud of her students. And the Board Room isn’t their only venue. In 2018, GSJSH students were invited to a showing competition at Folsom Lake College’s Harris Center Art Gallery and took home honors, were published in Style Magazine and have been invited to participate again this year.

As Phillips says, “’Can’t’ doesn’t exist in my vocabulary or classroom.” Phillips models her motto; she petitioned the College Board and succeeded in adding Studio Arts 2 and 3 to Golden Sierra’s A-G accredited curriculum. She is currently petitioning to add AP Art. This rigorous curriculum is embraced by her students.

Individualized programs are developed by each student; portfolios of student work are evaluated for professionalism. Each project is unique to each student who chooses the style of art they want to pursue. “These are incredible kids. When you let them go, incredible things happen.”

Incredible examples include Fox, surrealism acrylics, by Oceanna Richardson, 9th grade; Sister Portrait, realism multi medium, by Chloe Edington, 12th grade, who plans to attend art school in San Francisco next year and Old Man, realism, by Raelyn Davis, 11th grade.

As Phillips’ students attest: “She is encouraging, a mentor, doesn’t give up on us, works with us until we’re happy with what we’ve got. Her super energetic personality inspires us to keep trying.”

Phillips came to Golden Sierra in 2016 from Chico where she was working as an art therapist, doing rehabilitation with patients in Chico hospitals. Her passion for teaching brought her to Golden Sierra where she is inspiring today’s artists to test their understanding of what can be accomplished with hard work and perseverance.

Alex Marshall, Tyran Hamlin, Kyrtis Peoples, Nikiah Terra, Cannon Siracusa, and Dylan Bingham represented Golden Sierra Junior Senior High School in Stockton Dec. 15 at finals for California's first Cyber Robotics Coding Competition. They competed in pairs against twenty-three teams from other schools in California. One GSJSH team made a top ten finish. Marshall was presented an award for outstanding performance in the qualifying rounds. (Freeman also earned this award but was unable to travel so it was accepted on his behalf.) Golden Sierra was also presented an award for highest percentage of our students included in the contest. Coach Pete Delosa, Engineering & Video Production teacher, stated: ”We are proud to promote our school as a place where kids learn to write code.”

November’s Student of the Month is Paige Dehlinger As nominating teacher Tim Palmer said, “Paige is an outstanding student.  In addition to excelling academically, she works hard as part of the school drama club and peer advocate program. Paige is one of the best critical thinkers I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. Her writing is filled with expressive and articulate word choices and shows a mastery of reasoned thought and organization.”

Congratulations, Paige, on a job well done!

PRESS RELEASE - December 7, 2018

Winter Concert Delights

A starry backdrop provided the perfect setting for this year’s Winter Concert. Golden Sierra Junior-Senior High School’s band and choir, led by music director Sonia Henry, sang a variety of winter favorites and the band played jazz that including an original arrangement by student Matthew Rivera of Carol of the Bells.  Isabella Stigen provided a lovely narration of the concert. An audience sing-along closed the night of holiday music, sending families out into the cold night with music ringing in their ears. Job well done, GSJSHS band and choir!

Press Release

Student of the Month Program – High Achievers Earn Recognition at GSJSH

October 30, 2018

How are high achievers recognized at Golden Sierra High School?  A new Student of the Month program, designed by teacher Bill Sammons and Librarian Angela Schroeder, and in collaboration with Principal Jeremy Meyers, is highlighting a 7th-12th grade student each month.  All staff recognize one student in their class, then these students are reviewed by the team and a final selection is made.

What criteria is considered for recommendation?  Each teacher bases his/her decision upon character traits such as citizenship, service, integrity, contribution to class as well as academic achievement, perseverance and determination.  GSJSH is striving to ensure that students plan for their future; “building a college resume can begin as early as 7th grade,” says Sammons.  “It’s never too early to start.”

All students are recognized in class and receive a certificate of merit; the Student of the Month is featured in a video production designed and filmed in the CTE video production class.  The student’s picture and description of his/her outstanding student attributes is displayed in the hallway display case.

Student Landon York was selected by Sammons in September “for his academic achievement as well as his contribution to the school through his participation in extra-curricular activities.” October’s student was Madison Bradley, nominated by Mr. Robin Jones, who stated “I have seen enormous improvement from Algebra 1 to now.  She has transitioned …thanks to her perseverance.”

This tangible recognition of what makes a Golden Sierra Super Star is just one way to encourage students to work hard, set positive role models and achieve at their personal best.

Congratulations, Golden Sierra Students of the Month.
